On a recent weekend, KCUV featured “Goin’ Home – A Tribute to Fats Domino”. Some of the proceeds from the sale of that album will go towards new musical instruments and equipment for the New Orleans School System. While this is certainly a worthy cause, KCUV realizes that Denver’s own schools can use some help, too! So we got in touch with West High School and learned that their music department is sorely lacking for many instruments and supplies.
That’s when we came up with the idea for the KCUV “Music for Schools” program. We know that there’s plenty of unused and unwanted saxophones, flutes, drums, and maybe even a sousaphone or two languishing in basements, attics, storage areas and spare bedrooms across this great city and we want to round ‘em up, fix ‘em up, polish ‘em up, and get ‘em into the hands of the deserving kids at West High.
When we called our friends at Guitar Center, they were immediately excited about the idea and offered to serve as drop off centers. Then they called back and offered to repair and rehab any donated string instruments. Then they called back again and said they’d give 10% off any purchase when a musical donation is brought to one of their stores! (Certain restrictions apply because of manufacturer’s pricing limitations.)
Needless to say, we were blown away. And ready to go!
So…see below for a “wish list” from West High’s music department. If you’ve got something that’s on the list, please bring it to any Guitar Center location (those are listed below as well), and let’s put some music back into the hands of the kids at West! Thanks!
